Catharinas father was a wealthy citizen, related to the Amsterdam mayor and to the Dutch historian, poet and playwright P.C. Hooft.
Her mother was forty-one and she and her husband had given up hope of having children when Catharina was born.
In the nurse's hand a silver rattle with bells, a precious status symbol.
Catharina Hooft became famous, when she was painted by Frans Hals. (Wikipedia)
