Juan de Flandes ('John of Flanders') was an Early Netherlandish painter who was active in Spain from 1496 to 1519. Born around 1460 in Flanders (modern Belgium), and evidently trained there, Juan de Flandes became an artist at the court of Isabella of Castile in Spain painting accomplished portraits of her and members of her family in the Renaissance mode. Catharinas father was a wealthy citizen, related to the Amsterdam mayor and to the Dutch historian, poet and playwright P.C. Hooft.
Her mother was forty-one and she and her husband had given up hope of having children when Catharina was born.
In the nurse's hand a silver rattle with bells, a precious status symbol.
