St. Michael the Archangel is the chief of the heavenly host, the celestial army that defends the Church. He fights the rebel angels and the dragon of Revelations. He is patron saint of knights and of all trades allied to the production of weapons and scales. (Olga's Gallery)
Enkolpion, Byzantine Cameo of an Archangel, probably 14th century
An enkolpion is a devotional pendant or medallion meant to be worn around the neck.
Cameo is a method of carving, or an item of jewellery made in this manner. It features a raised (positive) relief image; contrast with intaglio, which has a negative image. There are two main materials for Cameo carving; Shells or Agate (called a Hardstone cameo).
